Aw, Scrap #003: Fridge Magnets

Who doesn’t want to add a little love to the fridge?  For me, my fridge is a constant companion, not because I’m always digging in it looking for calories but because I spend way too much time in the kitchen – and no matter where I am in said kitchen, the fridge is um, right next to me like a shadow.  So it’s important that the fridge be dressed well.  Or at least be a source of humor.

Enter paper scraps, words cut out from magazines, some cardboard, a little Mod Podge and some magnets.  This month we’re using all kinds of scraps to liven up that cold food holder!

Using Mod Podge, I adhered random words and phrases cut out from magazines onto bits of scrapbook paper to make them more colorful.  Then I glued them onto cardboard and cut them out with a scissors.  Which, if you want to ruin your scissors, by all means do it this way.  I don’t know what my problem is but I couldn’t wield a box cutter or x-acto knife if I needed to save myself from a bear, so I stubbornly use scissors to cut…everything.  (Luckily this cardboard was not super duty, so my scissors are just fine.  For now.)

Cover the tops and sides of your mounted words with Mod Podge (I used three coats), let dry, adhere magnets to the back with a glue gun and throw those puppies on the fridge!  (Okay, the line, “When you serve my drink please stick it in the fridge” from G. Love & Special Sauce’s Cold Beverage just popped into my head.)

You now have your own personalized set of Magnetic Poetry for free!  And who doesn’t like free?  Or personalized?  So, go!  Use those itty-bitty scraps you paper hoarder, you!  Pimp out that fridge and give yourself a little daily inspiration.

  9. What a great excuse to go out and buy scrapbooking paper, I’ve been looking for a reason to do it – I really don’t want to start scrapbooking but the papers are sooooo pretty I can feel myself being drawn in and I can now justify it by telling everyone its all for a project for me and the grandgirls to do on wet weekends.

    • Oh, I know! I started out buying it for scrapbooking but my interest fizzled out. I just love paper in general, so I continue to buy it for decoupaging, cards & invites, making party decorations…pretty much anything but scrapbooking! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, and I’m glad you’ve been inspired! :-)

Ok, my magazines that were headed to the doctor’s office me {go figure – all he has out are baby and parenting magazines – what about those of us who gave up our uteruses long ago and (PRAISE BE TO GOD!) don’t have young children anymore????} are NOW going to stay home and make something else to put on the REFRIGERATOR (I’d say “icebox” but my son who has heard the term for 17 years is now being deliberately incompetent by try to put stuff fresh stuff in the FREEZER – because “that’s where the ice is”). LA!

  22. My friend had these plain black and white magnets with words on it, and even then, I thought that was awesome. But these scrapbook magnets are even better! My friends and I made a run-on sentence with our magnets. It went like “running bee fell on teacher in bell of school at lunch with art books singing read”. and now, I’m going to make my own magnets! (I have a huge collection of scrap paper, wall paper, and newspaper/magazine clipipings. To magnets I come!)

  23. Good idea. I can do this. I have magnets on my fridge doing nothing. I think I have a glue gun somewhere and they were on offer in the supermarket the other day anyway. I just need some humour now,

    Reply
    • Yes, you can do it! I doubt I can help much supplying the humor, though I would highly recommend getting a copy of The Onion newspaper if it’s in your area – it’s a literal goldmine of funny stuff you can snip out for your new & improved magnets! :-)

  24. I’m doing this!! I’ve made magnets before – using the glass flat back marble type things that you buy from Michaels – and given them as gifts/kept them for myself. I really like this idea too. I have been needing to do something with my hoarder-like collection of magazines!

    • Glad to hear it – this will definitely help make a dent in the mag pile! (Or totally turn you psychotic…you should see how ragged some of my magazines are from all the stuff I’ve cut out!) Would love for you to share your results! :-)

    • Using shower curtain magnets sounds like a great idea. I bought magnets at the craft store once but they weren’t very strong. I think I’ll get supplies for my daughter to make me some this weekend. I’ve been needing magnets. I even asked my kids for some for Christmas.

      Reply
      • Too funny! Yeah, there are definitely some out there that aren’t too strong. I like the rolls you can get at the big box stores, then you can easily cut them to the size you want. Good luck!

  32. Great fun, even though I never met Mod Podge! I’m guessing this is some kind of clear varnish but you don’t have to spell it out for me cos I’m a bit of a clutz and not at all crafty. But you made me smile on a grey day and that can only be good.

    A very good idea!

But I’m not naturally a crafty person, to be honest, so even these simple ideas that I would be capable of, they just don’t occur to me!!

  84. Is there anything that can’t be improved with ModPodge?! This is an adorable idea… I bet it would be cool with photos too. Have you tried that? Or am I just tempting you with more ideas?

    Reply
    • Answer: No. There is nothing that can’t be improved with MP! :-) Photos would work, though I’ve never tried a full-size (ie 4×6), only smaller pieces cut from them. Sometimes the glossy paper freaks me out. But scanning the photo would fix that problem.

with 5 kids, I just plain ran out of “art” space on our fridge. So-I got 5 white metal message boards & hung them on our kitchen wall. (I like to think of it as a fridge extension) This leads to needing many more magnets & I hate ugly ones. THANK YOU for solving that problem and giving me a rainy day project for the whole family ;)

    • Oh, my goodness, I can imagine! (Well I can’t. I only have one. But that one equals five sometimes.) So glad that you’re feeling inspired! I’d love to see your results. I think it would be fun if the kids drew pictures, then you cut them into squares – magnets AND a puzzle! :-)
