Who doesn’t want to add a little love to the fridge? For me, my fridge is a constant companion, not because I’m always digging in it looking for calories but because I spend way too much time in the kitchen – and no matter where I am in said kitchen, the fridge is um, right next to me like a shadow. So it’s important that the fridge be dressed well. Or at least be a source of humor.
Enter paper scraps, words cut out from magazines, some cardboard, a little Mod Podge and some magnets. This month we’re using all kinds of scraps to liven up that cold food holder!
Using Mod Podge, I adhered random words and phrases cut out from magazines onto bits of scrapbook paper to make them more colorful. Then I glued them onto cardboard and cut them out with a scissors. Which, if you want to ruin your scissors, by all means do it this way. I don’t know what my problem is but I couldn’t wield a box cutter or x-acto knife if I needed to save myself from a bear, so I stubbornly use scissors to cut…everything. (Luckily this cardboard was not super duty, so my scissors are just fine. For now.)
Cover the tops and sides of your mounted words with Mod Podge (I used three coats), let dry, adhere magnets to the back with a glue gun and throw those puppies on the fridge! (Okay, the line, “When you serve my drink please stick it in the fridge” from G. Love & Special Sauce’s Cold Beverage just popped into my head.)
You now have your own personalized set of Magnetic Poetry for free! And who doesn’t like free? Or personalized? So, go! Use those itty-bitty scraps you paper hoarder, you! Pimp out that fridge and give yourself a little daily inspiration.

/ February 2, 2012What a great excuse to go out and buy scrapbooking paper, I’ve been looking for a reason to do it – I really don’t want to start scrapbooking but the papers are sooooo pretty I can feel myself being drawn in and I can now justify it by telling everyone its all for a project for me and the grandgirls to do on wet weekends.

sarah@antidote_studio
/ February 2, 2012Oh, I know! I started out buying it for scrapbooking but my interest fizzled out. I just love paper in general, so I continue to buy it for decoupaging, cards & invites, making party decorations…pretty much anything but scrapbooking! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, and I’m glad you’ve been inspired!

/ February 1, 2012Ok, my magazines that were headed to the doctor’s office me {go figure – all he has out are baby and parenting magazines – what about those of us who gave up our uteruses long ago and (PRAISE BE TO GOD!) don’t have young children anymore????} are NOW going to stay home and make something else to put on the REFRIGERATOR (I’d say “icebox” but my son who has heard the term for 17 years is now being deliberately incompetent by try to put stuff fresh stuff in the FREEZER – because “that’s where the ice is”). / February 1, 2012My friend had these plain black and white magnets with words on it, and even then, I thought that was awesome. But these scrapbook magnets are even better! My friends and I made a run-on sentence with our magnets. It went like “running bee fell on teacher in bell of school at lunch with art books singing read”. and now, I’m going to make my own magnets! (I have a huge collection of scrap paper, wall paper, and newspaper/magazine clipipings. To magnets I come!)
sarah@antidote_studio
/ February 1, 2012Awesome! I do love all the silly stuff you can write with Mag Po. Sounds like you have a great stash…get crackin’!
Mike Maynard
/ February 1, 2012Good idea. I can do this. I have magnets on my fridge doing nothing. I think I have a glue gun somewhere and they were on offer in the supermarket the other day anyway. I just need some humour now,
sarah@antidote_studio
/ February 1, 2012Yes, you can do it! I doubt I can help much supplying the humor, though I would highly recommend getting a copy of The Onion newspaper if it’s in your area – it’s a literal goldmine of funny stuff you can snip out for your new & improved magnets!
claresworriesandwisdom
/ February 1, 2012I’m doing this!! I’ve made magnets before – using the glass flat back marble type things that you buy from Michaels – and given them as gifts/kept them for myself. I really like this idea too. I have been needing to do something with my hoarder-like collection of magazines!
sarah@antidote_studio
/ February 1, 2012Glad to hear it – this will definitely help make a dent in the mag pile! (Or totally turn you psychotic…you should see how ragged some of my magazines are from all the stuff I’ve cut out!) Would love for you to share your results!

/ February 1, 2012Thanks so much! Yes, the shower curtain magnets are super strong! I’d love to see your results!
workhomebalance
/ February 3, 2012Using shower curtain magnets sounds like a great idea. I bought magnets at the craft store once but they weren’t very strong. I think I’ll get supplies for my daughter to make me some this weekend. I’ve been needing magnets. I even asked my kids for some for Christmas.
sarah@antidote_studio
/ February 3, 2012Too funny! Yeah, there are definitely some out there that aren’t too strong. I like the rolls you can get at the big box stores, then you can easily cut them to the size you want. Good luck!

/ February 1, 2012Great fun, even though I never met Mod Podge! I’m guessing this is some kind of clear varnish but you don’t have to spell it out for me cos I’m a bit of a clutz and not at all crafty. But you made me smile on a grey day and that can only be good.
sarah@antidote_studio

/ February 1, 2012This is simple and genious! I want to copy this idea for my kitchen cork board – I decided to make up many words that could be used in a sentence or phrase to leave for my significant other, like “got milk?” or “it’s never too late to mend” (the follwoing – after and argument
)
A very good idea!
http://dressupforme.wordpress.com/
sarah@antidote_studio
/ February 1, 2012Thanks so much! I think these would work just as well being mounted on thumb tacks instead of magnets! Yes, in my house the common phrases will be things like “no, you were wrong this time” and “put the seat down” lol…

/ February 1, 2012What a great idea! I’ve been saying for ages that I need more magnets on my fridge – I stick so much stuff on it, and don’t have many magnets to stick it all with! But I’m not naturally a crafty person, to be honest, so even these simple ideas that I would be capable of, they just don’t occur to me!!
sarah@antidote_studio

I wish more people used magnets on their fridges! I remember when I was younger and our refrigerator would be covered with different magnets! Dogs, vegetables, ones that play music, etc. I guess maybe that was a 90s thing, but either way I miss it!

Nice idea!
sarah@antidote_studio

/ January 31, 2012Is there anything that can’t be improved with ModPodge?! This is an adorable idea… I bet it would be cool with photos too. Have you tried that? Or am I just tempting you with more ideas?
sarah@antidote_studio
/ January 31, 2012Answer: No. There is nothing that can’t be improved with MP!
Photos would work, though I’ve never tried a full-size (ie 4×6), only smaller pieces cut from them. Sometimes the glossy paper freaks me out. But scanning the photo would fix that problem.

/ January 31, 2012This is amazing!! I love the idea of this. My fridge is naked and I have been wanting to buy magnents for so long and now I know I don’t have to. Thank you for the idea!!!

/ January 31, 2012Get ‘er dressed!
Don’t limit your ideas to paper…I’ve glued magnets on Sharpies that have run out of ink. (If you love Sharpies, you’ll want them on your fridge!) Good luck!

/ January 31, 2012with 5 kids, I just plain ran out of “art” space on our fridge. So-I got 5 white metal message boards & hung them on our kitchen wall. (I like to think of it as a fridge extension) This leads to needing many more magnets & I hate ugly ones. THANK YOU for solving that problem and giving me a rainy day project for the whole family

/ January 31, 2012Oh, my goodness, I can imagine! (Well I can’t. I only have one. But that one equals five sometimes.) So glad that you’re feeling inspired! I’d love to see your results. I think it would be fun if the kids drew pictures, then you cut them into squares – magnets AND a puzzle!

/ January 31, 2012I love how you describe the fridge as your constant companion, hovering over you as you try to work. Was this an exercise to imagine what it might be thinking?
sarah@antidote_studio
/ January 31, 2012I know what it’s thinking. It’s either “Could you please make me full so I can be more energy efficient?” or “Momma, pleeeeease. Can you take a cooking class?” Not coincidentally my 4-yr-old (and other constant companion) feels the same.

/ January 31, 2012I too collect old magnets from everywhere, love the big heavy duty ones at the bottom of those yucky shower curtains. Thanks for the inspiration!
sarah@antidote_studio
/ January 31, 2012Oooh, yes, those thick as two quarters ones are awesome!

/ January 31, 2012SO CUTE!! How creative, I love this idea!

/ January 31, 2012Thank you! I hope I’ve inspired a few to try it. SO easy.

/ January 31, 2012It’s a drag the stainless appliances are not magnetic – I miss mine!
sarah@antidote_studio
/ January 31, 2012Agreed…one of the only benefits of a bland white apartment rental – a fridge I can stick magnets on!

/ January 31, 2012This is so creative! I wish I had more artistic skills. Where do you buy the magnets from? I remember having some magnet backings but they weren’t very strong.
sarah@antidote_studio
/ January 31, 2012Thank you! I’ve never bought a magnet in my life. I’ve been collecting them. Every fridge-magnet calendar from the insurance agent, pizza place, etc. get cut up. Or I peel them off magnets I don’t like anymore.
But any craft store or big box will have little rolls you can buy. This would be a good first project…we are all artistic, you included.

/ January 31, 2012loved your header !!!
amazing post
“the fridge be dressed well” was a good one
sarah@antidote_studio
/ January 31, 2012Thanks so much! That header is the best DIY I could come up with since I’m not, um, techie. At all.

/ January 31, 2012What a GREAT idea…love it!
Of course, my fridge would constantly serve as a reminder to “Write your freelance article — due today” or “Write a blog post.”
But there are worse sources of inspiration, right?
sarah@antidote_studio
/ January 31, 2012I’m not gonna lie. I got in over my head with the amount of words I cut out and I ran out of steam…but when I get them all mounted you can bet there will be plenty of mantras on my fridge. Like “do this” or “stop complaining” or “make something already!” Thanks for your comment!
